The Noetical Proposals

A Stance on Fiction’s Ontological Existence

Reality, on this account, is not one layer but three: the Spiritual, the Physical, and the Noetical — coexistent, coterminous, each with its own mode of being. What follows is a formal description of that structure, the law that governs how its tiers act upon one another, and the proposals extending from both.

I. The Tripartite Ontology

Noetical Existence

A formal description of the tripartite ontology: reality composed of three coexistent, coterminous layers of being, each occupying the same space while maintaining its own distinct mode of existence.

Noetical Existence is a theological and ontological framework proposing that reality is composed of three coexistent, coterminous layers of being: the Spiritual, the Physical, and the Noetical. Each layer occupies the same space simultaneously while maintaining its own distinct mode of existence. The framework is rooted in biblical theology while extending into the domain of human creativity and thought, proposing that what the mind creates takes up genuine residence within its own order of reality.

The name of the framework reflects its structure directly. Just as Physical existence and Spiritual existence describe the modes of being native to their respective realms, Noetical existence — derived from the Greek nous, meaning mind or intellect — describes the mode of being native to the realm of creation and creativity.

The Three Existences
I. Spiritual Existence Uppermost Tier

The Spiritual is understood in the tradition of biblical theology: the realm of God, angels, and incorporeal divine agency. It is the originating source of the structure, the realm from which being itself first emanates. The Spiritual is not bound by the laws of the Physical, can perceive and interact with both lower tiers, and exercises causal influence downward through the hierarchy. Its nature, its inhabitants, and its mechanics are not substantially redefined within this framework; rather, they are accepted as biblical theology describes them and serve as the foundation from which the rest of the structure is reasoned. The Spiritual is defined, in part, by its totality of perception. Just as God is understood to know humanity fully and completely—every thought and intention—the Spiritual comprehends the Physical in its entirety.

II. Physical Existence Middle Tier

The Physical is the material world as experienced by humans: the realm of matter, sensation, time, and causation as commonly understood. Humanity is native to this tier. Human beings perceive its laws, are subject to them, and operate within them. The Physical is bounded above by the Spiritual, which can act upon it, and bounded below by the Noetical, in which the physical can act upon.

III. Noetical Existence Third Tier

The Noetical is the realm into which all human creativity—every imagined world, every character, every conceived idea—exists. The Noetical is not the mind itself; but what the mind produces. The foundational claim of this framework is that creative agency does not simply exist as chemicals within the mindscape and brain. Thoughts seem to carry some presence, and presences must occupy some ontological locus. From this, all creative works—fictional worlds, imagined beings, etc.—exist within the Noetical as genuinely as Physical objects exist in the Physical world. They are not metaphors nor abstractions. They are real, occupying a real layer of reality, governed by that layer's own mode of existence.

Philosophical Resonances

Explicitly grounded in biblical theology rather than departing from it, the framework extends from a simple observation made by J.R.R. Tolkien: human beings, created in the image of a Creator, create. Biblical theology accounts for the Spiritual and the Physical, but does not address where the products of human creativity reside — this framework proposes that they must reside somewhere, and that the same logic governing the Spiritual and Physical applies to a layer of creativity.

The Sub-Creator
J.R.R. Tolkien
Human beings, made in the image of a Creator, create in turn — the founding observation from which the Noetical is extended.
Subsistence
Alexius Meinong
Non-existent objects, including fictional entities, possess a form of being distinct from physical existence. A character subsists — here, as there — but Noetical Existence goes further, giving that claim a structured hierarchy.

In this sense, the Noetical is humanity’s mark on the structure of existence. It would not exist without Physical beings to fill it, just as the Physical would not exist without the Spiritual to originate it. The act of creativity is ontological. Something new enters reality when a mind creates.

II. The Governing Directional Law

Flow Substratism

Where Noetical Existence establishes the tiers, Flow Substratism establishes the law that governs how they act upon each other — how creative power flows, in descending order from the origin.

Spiritualorigin
Physicalcreative faculty
Noeticalterminus

The Spiritual can act upon the Physical — angels and divine agency influence the emotions, circumstances, and events of human life. The Physical cannot act upon the Spiritual by Physical means; no human weapon or will performed through physical agency can access or reach it.

The same law applies between the Physical and the Noetical. Human beings fill the Noetical through their creative faculty, acting upon it through thought: shaping its inhabitants, defining its worlds, determining its internal laws. Humanity stands to the Noetical exactly as the Spiritual stands to the Physical — the higher-order force that shapes and acts upon what lies below.

What the Noetical lacks is not reality but reach upward. A fictional deity, however vast and terrible in description, cannot shatter a Physical mind, because it exists in a tier that has no upward influence to the Physical. Its immensity is only native to its own realm. Within the Noetical, it may well be everything described — but that power does not extend upward.

Comprehension & Depletion

A secondary feature governs each tier’s capacity to understand the tier below it: God comprehends the Physical in its entirety, and by the same logic, Physical beings comprehend the Noetical in full. The author knows the fictional world; the dreamer holds the dream. This understanding is what determines how much of an idea exists in the Noetical — each tier of existence comprehends the tier below it completely.

The caveat is that Flow Substratism’s downward cascade predicts that creative power slowly fractions and partitions off the further it descends. This is why the Physical cannot create to the extent of the Spiritual, and can forget its creations.

Philosophical Resonance
Emanationism
Plotinus
A hierarchical reality in which being flows downward from a singular source through successive tiers, each possessing less originating power than the one above. Flow Substratism shares this descending, unidirectional architecture — but inverts it: where Neoplatonism places pure mind at the top as most real, the Noetical sits at the bottom, filled by the Physical rather than defining it.
Certainty & Scope

Author’s Note

This framework’s two core claims — Noetical Existence and Flow Substratism — carry the most support of anything presented here. Additional content, whether further elaboration or new material entirely, rests on this same foundation, and so will progressively carry less certainty. The further a claim sits from these two points, the more it shifts from philosophical reasoning into speculation.

Reasoned Extended Speculative

This uncertainty extends to the framework’s core terms as well. Because the Noetical tier is, by definition, constituted by ideas, its structure is inherently perspectival: this document offers one coherent account of how it remains ordered, but a different account, equally internally consistent, could hold with equal validity. The Noetical exists only insofar as it is defined — what remains undefined does not yet exist within this tier, and where multiple definitions arise, they coexist simultaneously. This self-referential quality is not an exception to the framework but an expression of it: the Noetical governs its own reflection just as it governs any other idea it contains.

Provenance

Noetical Existence and Flow Substratism was developed as a personal philosophical framework by the author.

III. Noetical Terminality

The Matryoshka Effect

A formal description of why nested fiction does not produce nested tiers of existence.

The name is chosen deliberately against expectation. A Matryoshka doll suggests depth: each figure opens to reveal another, smaller, seemingly without end. The Matryoshka Effect exists to name the opposite. When a Noetical creation depicts its own act of creation — a story about a person writing a story, a character who dreams up a world of their own — the intuitive expectation is that a tier of existence lies beneath the Noetical, and beneath that tier another, regressing indefinitely. This does not occur. What looks like nesting is, in fact, flattening: however many layers of narrative framing a work contains, all of them come to rest on the same single Noetical tier.

The Absence of a Second Origin

When a Noetical being is depicted as “creating,” no second origin point has entered the structure. The apparent act of creation is Noetical content, authored by the same Physical mind that authored everything else in that work. A regress requires a new causal origin at each step. Here there is only ever one — the Physical mind — reaching into the same tier repeatedly.

The Depletion of Creative Power

Creative power diminishes as it descends the hierarchy. The Physical receives only a fraction of the Spiritual’s originating creative power; by the time that power has gone toward filling the Noetical, it has reached its lowest point of transmission. There is nothing left over for the Noetical to pass further downward — the Noetical is the tier at which descending power approaches zero, which is why it cannot originate a fourth.

This is also why a Noetical being’s free will, however convincingly written, cannot create a new tier. The Noetical receives none of its own creativity to redistribute — creating a half-will, where a character’s will is both described and exercised: incapable to author, incapable to exist without an author, but still alive in some vague sense.

Synthesis

Because there is no second origin point, and no remaining power even if one were presumed, a Noetical creation depicting its own creative act does not produce a nested tier of existence. It produces more Noetical content, authored, as everything else in the Noetical is, by the Physical mind. A world imagined by a fictional author is not one tier removed from the fictional author — it sits exactly where the fictional author sits.

IV. The Ascending Caveat

The Impress Effect

Flow Substratism establishes that power moves in one direction only. The Impress Effect names the one caveat to that law’s classical phrasing — not a reversal, but a clarification of what it actually means.

Presence Without Passage

A lower tier cannot occupy the tier above it — the Physical cannot be in the Spiritual; the Noetical cannot be in the Physical or Spiritual. This much Flow Substratism already establishes, and the Impress Effect does not challenge it. What it identifies is that a lower tier’s presence produces a distortion in the tier above it, without the lower tier ever crossing the boundary.

Beneath
The thing itself. Never visible. Never crossing.
The Impression
Real, visible, continuous — the shape rising on the surface above.

Consider something resting beneath a thick blanket. The blanket does not part, and the thing beneath it never becomes visible directly — it cannot be seen, only its shape. Yet the blanket rises and settles into that shape for as long as the thing remains beneath it. Nothing has actually crossed it. What has appeared on its surface is not the thing itself, but the impression of the thing — real, visible, continuous, and entirely dependent on a presence it cannot touch directly.

The Soul as Impression
God forms the man’s body first — a wholly Physical act — and only then breathes life into him. The soul is not fashioned first and the body derived from it; the sequence runs the other way. Genesis 2:7, as read within this framework

The soul is Spiritual in substance, belonging entirely to the tier above, yet it exists in the particular shape it does only because a Physical body was formed for it to be the soul of. The Physical never enters the Spiritual to produce this — the soul is the Spiritual’s own fabric, impressed into the shape of a Physical presence it can register but never house. God then acts upon man through the soul: the impression becomes the very thing the Spiritual uses to reach the Physical. The direction of power is unchanged; it still runs downward.

The Noetical Impression

The same structure holds one tier down. Creativity shapes the Noetical entirely through downward willed action, exactly as Flow Substratism describes — but the Noetical’s presence, for as long as it exists, impresses itself continuously onto the Physical mind as what is experienced as thought. This is not a delayed echo, and not a second creative act; it is the concurrent, ongoing visibility of Noetical content showing through into the Physical, the way the shape beneath the blanket is visible for exactly as long as the thing itself remains beneath it.

The Physical mind then uses this impression — thought — as its means of continuing to shape and act upon the Noetical, just as the Spiritual uses the soul as its means of continuing to act upon the Physical. In neither case does the lower tier gain reach upward.

Why This Is a Caveat, Not a Violation

Flow Substratism, properly understood, governs active causal power — the capacity of an existence to shape, determine, or exert will upon another. Under that definition, nothing has changed: power still moves in a single direction, and no lower tier gains any capacity to act upon the tier above it. What the Impress Effect corrects is an overstatement in the law’s classical phrasing — that nothing whatsoever ascends. Something does ascend: a shape, an impression, wholly inert and without agency, native in substance to the tier it appears in rather than the tier it reflects. This impression carries no power or influence upward.

V. The Interior Structure of the Noetical

Noetical Topography

Flow Substratism and Noetical Existence establish that the Noetical is real, filled by the Physical, and comprehended by it in full — but not how it is arranged internally. What follows is one coherent, personally-held account among possible others.

Because merely attempting to view the Noetical’s internal order is itself a creative act, and therefore Noetical in nature, no single account of that order can claim final authority. What can be said with more confidence is the basic shape beneath any such account: every idea occupies its own discrete space, entire and separate, while remaining part of one single existence encompassing all of them — stars, distinct and unconnected in themselves, sharing a single sky.

Filled Spaces
WorldsBase Unit
The combined structure of ideas that make up a single act of imagining. Exists only as much, and only in the shape, as it has actually been defined by its author — as small as a village or as vast as a multiverse. Where two or more people share the same conception, it remains one World held in common.
AlternatesDivergent World
A World defined by its relationship to a prior World rather than originating independently — a differing inference of the original, purposeful or otherwise. Every Alternate is a World; not every World is an Alternate.
ConvergentsHub World
A type of Alternate carrying no substantial narrative of its own — a point of meeting for other Worlds via Connections. Forums, shared servers, and collaborative roleplay spaces are its clearest instances.
ConnectionsRelational Link
The link between separate Worlds — as minor as one World merely referencing another, or as substantial as travel between them. The mechanism, not the boundary, by which sealed Worlds touch.
RealmsCanon Boundary
Governs what counts as canon to a World: what falls within may connect or merge with it; what falls outside cannot, and tends to form as an Alternate. Realms can overlap — fan-fiction draws upon an original without the original’s Realm extending back to claim it in return.
DimensionsLargest Grouping
The largest grouping of Noetical content still referring to a single subject — the totality formed when a continuity grows too large for one plane to hold, as in extended series or shared fictional universes. Wraps around every World, Plane, and Connection belonging to that continuity.
Empty Spaces
PlanesUnfilled Expanse
The empty space lying between Worlds and their Connections — recursive and liminal, extending as far as whatever loose sense of “beyond” an author has written into a World’s edges. It is precisely within this unfilled space that Alternates and new Worlds take shape.
Anyparxiaανυπαρξία
The space between Dimensions themselves, where nothing exists — not a World, not a Plane, not even emptiness as a Plane is. It resists definition by its own nature. A forgotten World remains frozen until it fades into Anyparxia, starved of creativity or memory from above.
